Poster project for Magic Flute opera

at the LA Opera Dorothy Chandler Pavilion implementing experimental typography.

 

Since the bell and the flute are both magical instruments in this opera, I used them to convey a sense magic in the typography. I illustrated this by creating wisps of mist trailing from the instruments out across a starry night sky. 

 

As this project was an exploration of hand-created typography the text had to be physically constructed and then digitally composited into the final design. I laser cut my typography from wood, hand painted, and embossed with gold glitter. I then photographed my handmade type onto the environment in Photoshop.
